In 2007,
four hundred cats and kittens were placed in homes
with families where they were indoor kitties, and were allowed
outdoors only under the careful supervision of their adoptive
families.
Our assisted
spay/neuter grant was renewed, and we helped 252 low-income
owners spay and neuter their cats. Female cats normally have
about ten kittens per year so we prevented about 1,260 unwanted
kittens from being born.
We started a new
feral spay/alter program mid year.
We paid for 96 feral cats to be altered, thus
preventing another
480 kittens from
being born.
Our adoptive cats and kittens received two immunizations,
worming, testing, parasite control and were altered.
We were
fortunate to have 40 volunteers, divided between fund raising,
accounting, maintenance, and assisting with cleaning and
socializing in three shifts daily, seven days a week. Our
shelter volunteers were assisted by high school students who
volunteered to get credit for some of their classes. Some of
our volunteers actually were here twenty hours per week cleaning
and doing our never ending laundry.
We had an
unusually busy year, with the population in our shelter and
other buildings at an average of about 88 kitty residents, and
70 others were in foster homes. Our foster home parents
had access to litter, food and medical care.
We
thank the community members for their donations and also our
grant donors; without their help we could certainly not continue
our shelter activities.
